What you should know about Ikaria?

Ikaria is an island in the North Aegean Sea and one of the East Aegean Islands. Ikaria is located west of Samos and south of Chios. Its capital is the town of Agios Kirikos. Tourism on Ikaria is unimposing for all and reflects an "Ikarian Balance" between nature, freedom, time, and development. The island will soon become nearly autonomous regarding energy consumption by using almost exclusively "Green Energy". The construction of the Pilot Hybrid Hydro-Electric Plant, the environmentally friendly power production plant using renewable energy sources in Europe, is expected to be completed in 2010 and provide 100% of the electricity in the winter months and 70% in the summer months.

Places to see in Ikaria

In general, Icaria is an island worth exploring, since it has some really nice little villages and beaches. In Ag Kirikos there is an archaeological museum. In Kambos there is an archaeological museum with various artifacts from the excavations in the area. Here the ancient capital used to be. It was called Oinoe ("Wine") since the wine production was important here. There is also an old monastery here called Theoctistis ("God-built") and in Nas you can see the ancient ruins from a temple dedicated to Artemis.

How to reach Ikaria

Ikaria is 144 nautical miles from Piraeus (the port of Athens) and you will get there by boat in between 8-9 hours. If you are in the north of Greece you can take the boat from Kavala to Ikaria, only once a week. There are also various connections with other islands like Samos and Fournoi. It is always advisable to check boat schedules before planning your trip.

Ikaria can be reached year round by air and has an airport, located on the south eastern part of the island, 12 km from Agios Kirikos village. There are flights directly from Athens by Olympic Air and from Crete during the summer via SkyExpress.
